Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about permeable concrete and working with Permcon.

Addressing common misconceptions

Is permeable concrete weaker than standard concrete?+

Permeable concrete is not intended to be treated as a like-for-like replacement for every standard concrete application. It is an engineered system designed for suitable applications, traffic conditions and drainage requirements. When correctly specified and installed, it can deliver durable performance across residential, commercial, council and infrastructure environments.

Does permeable concrete clog easily?+

Any permeable system requires appropriate design and maintenance. We consider the site environment, surrounding debris load, use case and cleaning requirements when scoping a project. Correct installation and sensible maintenance help protect long-term permeability.

Is it only for residential use?+

No. We work across residential, commercial, municipal and civil infrastructure projects. The system can be assessed for a wide range of applications, including car parks, footpaths, access areas, public realm works and compliance-heavy project environments.

Is permeable concrete experimental?+

Permcon is a proprietary system delivered by a specialist Australian provider with certified management systems and project experience across multiple sectors. It is best understood as engineered infrastructure, not decorative paving or a DIY surface.

Why choose Australian Permeable Concrete?

At Australian Permeable Concrete we bring design, technology and installation together under one project delivery model. This gives clients one experienced team responsible for the permeable concrete system from planning through to completion.

Clients choose us for:

  • Proprietary Permcon permeable concrete technology
  • Full-service design, engineering and installation
  • Experience across domestic, commercial, council and civil projects
  • Stormwater-focused project outcomes
  • Australian Made capability
  • Certified safety, quality and environmental management systems
  • Australia-wide project reach

FAQs

What is Permcon permeable concrete technology?+

Permcon is our proprietary permeable concrete system. It is designed to allow water to pass through the concrete surface into the prepared base below, supporting stormwater management and water-sensitive project outcomes.

How does permeable concrete work in stormwater management?+

It is made with carefully graded aggregate and little to no fine sand, creating roughly 15–25% interconnected voids. Rainwater flows through these voids, through a permeable sub-base, and back into the natural water table, rather than pooling on the surface or running off into drains. Designed as part of the broader site solution, that is what manages runoff and supports drainage requirements.

Is permeable concrete suitable for heavy traffic areas?+

Yes. When correctly designed and installed, permeable concrete carries pedestrian and vehicle loads, from residential driveways through to commercial car parks and heavy-duty civil applications. We assess the conditions, intended load and traffic type on each project before recommending the system design.

How does Permcon differ from standard permeable concrete systems?+

Permcon is a proprietary technology delivered as part of a full design and installation service. We manage the system specification, site preparation, installation and project delivery rather than simply supplying a concrete product.

Does the system require maintenance or cleaning?+

It is low maintenance. Keeping the surface clear of fine sediment, with occasional pressure washing or vacuum sweeping, maintains its permeability over the long term. The right approach depends on the surrounding environment, use case and exposure to sediment or debris.

How long does Permcon permeable concrete last?+

Permeable concrete has a similar lifespan to traditional concrete. Whilst the exact lifespan depends on the site conditions, design, traffic exposure, installation quality and maintenance. We will scope each project around the expected use and performance requirements.

Commonly used permeable concrete areas lifespan can exceed 30+ years.

Where can Permcon be used?+

Driveways, footpaths and pathways, car parks, sports courts, tree protection zones, and a wide range of commercial, civil and public-realm applications. We design each mix and profile to suit the loads and conditions of the site. Suitability is confirmed by project assessment.

Who do Australian Permeable Concrete work with?+

We work with homeowners, builders, contractors, developers, councils, government bodies and civil infrastructure clients across Australia.

More questions, answered

What is permeable concrete?+

Permeable concrete (also called porous or pervious concrete) is a specially engineered concrete with an open, interconnected pore structure that lets water pass straight through the surface and drain into the ground below. It manages stormwater on site while providing a durable, trafficable surface.

What are the benefits of permeable concrete?+

It reduces surface pooling and flooding, lowers the load on stormwater systems, helps recharge groundwater, and reduces surface heat. It can also help satisfy Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and on-site detention requirements, often reducing the need for separate drainage pits and pipes.

Does permeable concrete help meet council and stormwater requirements?+

In many cases, yes. Permeable concrete is frequently specified to help meet WSUD and on-site stormwater management requirements. We are happy to work with your engineer, builder or council on the design.

Can permeable concrete be coloured or given different finishes?+

Yes. A range of aggregates, colours and finishes are available, so the surface suits the look of your project as well as its drainage performance.

What is the difference between Permcon and Ultracon?+

Permcon and Ultracon are our proprietary permeable concrete products, engineered for different applications and performance requirements. Contact our team and we will recommend the right solution for your project.
